1 out of 5 women experience a Perinatal Mood or Anxiety Disorder
And 1 out of 10 men experience Postpartum Depression
The perinatal period from planning for pregnancy, conception, pregnancy, birth and the first year of life with baby comes with many stressors and challenges for parents. We are thrown into an unfamiliar world, with only the tools we’ve collected from our own experience in the parent-child relationship. Where is the handbook?
Counseling during this phase can feel like being given that handbook. Blending education, understanding, and mindfulness, I work with new and prospective parents to gain their confidence and find patience and compassion for themselves along the way. My practice focuses on trauma and culturally informed care for birthers. Counseling can focus on prevention, support, or direct treatment for mood and anxiety disorders.
Breastfeeding, pumping, baby-wearing–I encourage new parents to come as they are. Babies are welcome in session and we can flexibly switch between in-person, video, and phone calls if need be.
You may be coming to counseling as you are trying to conceive, navigating IVF and/or after loss. Therapy can be a holding space for the ups and downs of this grief. I encourage you to prioritize the very human need of connection, sharing your story, and processing.
